Too Wet for Icebergs
All the late winter snowfalls seem to have plunged us back into deepest winter around here.
Gales and blizzards combined to delay my arrival on Shetland by a couple of days. By all accounts it was a tad breezy on the isles for a couple of days even by Shetland standards.
The boat was a bit bumpy. Luckily I’ve always felt ok when the sea has been a bit rough, but I couldn’t help feeling sorry for a chef from Glasgow who was going up to work in Orkney for a year. He was suffering, and had no idea where he was heading. He didn’t help himself by constantly peering out of the windows to see if he could spot an iceberg!
Things seemed to clear up pretty fast though and I had two calm but cold days on Yell and another on Whalsay before heading to Brae for their Up-helly-aa weekend.
It was a fine night for the torchlight procession and the burning Viking galley was quite a site with the flames reflecting off of the waters in the voe.
Had a great weekend, and I’m still wondering where all the people came from to pack the pubs on Hop day.
After a day in Lerwick it was back out to Yell, this time in a blizzard before getting the boat back home. I seem to have been lucky with the weather again because gales and more snow followed me home with a foot of the white stuff falling in Strath the day after I got back.
Last weekend it was the Viking Queen’s turn to head to Shetland for a bit of a do, whilst I enjoyed a Pink Floyd tribute band in Dingwall, and very good they were too.
This week has seen torrential rain sweep in and we are all up to our ankles in Strath mud again. Everything is damp and bedraggled and the wet stuff is still falling.
I think I could do with a spot of warm sunshine and maybe a tall glass by my side with an iceberg floating in it.
